MARSHALL APPLEWHITE INTERVIEW 2017 THEE KRYPTEIA ZINE

I have made a bunch ov zines through Clan Destine I've decided to archive some bits, here is an interview with Detroit's mighty Marshall Applewhite from Thee Krypteia No. 2 back in 2017

Who the fvck are you and what do you want?

I am George Michael and I want your sex!

What drew you to thee Heavens Gate?

I have always had an extreme fascination with suicide cults and aliens. Heavens Gate kinda played into both of those fascinations.

OktoRed, Marshall Applewhite, any other aliases you record under? Break em down for us

OktoRed covers most of my bass music stuff i.e. dubstep, grime, moombahton and an occasional house tune.

Marshall Applewhite encompasses all things slow and gritty i.e. Sludge

Cocky Balboa fills my ghettotech/footwork end of things.

And I'm the less beautiful half of Gauche Kids, an ongoing project with my friend Lise from Paris focusing on all sorts of odd, chill melodic electronica.

How did you get together with thee How To Kill crew, The Friend, Shady P?

When the Friend moved back to Detroit he linked us all up. We were all in this place where we were sick of all the mundane music coming out of Detroit. Thus birthed the HTK label and all the sludge that followed.

You were around when Ghettotech hit in Detroit any stories about those daze?

I only caught the tail end of anything dealing with the original scene, as i was a bit young when it was happening. But us doing sludge is in about the same realm as how they were originally received doing the ghettotech stuff. Primarily with the odd tempo of the music not fitting into the status quo.

You also record for YoSucka! I've heard some rad stories from Brian about DJ Godfather etc whats happening with YoSucka! now and also Detroit Underground?

As of now, we are continuing to push sludge and techno on YoSucka!. Detroit Underground is still focusing on all things experimental. Those guy do amazing work curating insane releases from around the world of idm and beyond.

So here's a question for you, what was thee first House record? First Techno record?

The first techno record in my opinion was Shari Vari by A Number Of Names.
As for house, i cant really say. Im not up on house history as much as techno and electro.

Dubstep and even bits ov Grime are making their way into electronic/club music in thee USA, why do you think this is? I was surprised Drum & Bass never really took off i the US for some reason.
Dubstep took hold of popular culture a few years back here due to the rise of the club scene with the youth. Grime is finally starting to crossover, but it seems like too little too late in some ways. Dubstep has ruled the club scene single handedly since about 2010 creating new scenes where there typically were none.

How did you get into Grime and Dubstep?

Around 2004 i starting seeing shit pop up on share sites. Mostly really bad radio rips of pirate radio grime shows. At that time it seemed to me like a lot of the tunes were still in this transitionary phase between garage and something new, but the vocals really drew me in. It was very exciting to hear a new kind of rap. Grime brought me back the early 90s when American MCs were still really playing with their voices and having fun with the music. It didn't seem like it was about selling records as much as it was just creating some fresh.

You have recorded lots ov covers, we've even released a couple on Clan Destine (Joy Division and A Number Of Names) what makes you chose a track to cover it?

Most of the time i just like to remake something that I can play in my sets. I play mostly original tunes when i play out, so a lot of these old tunes won't fit the way id like. Its more of a necessity than anything else.

You also record a fvck ton ov tracks, whats yr recording process? Or are you actually a bunch ov guys with beards who live in thee same house but just come out one at a time?

I've actually created a bunch of A.I. bots that just run on other peoples devices via trojan viruses i spam via email. They do most of the works. I spend most of my time sitting back watching eating kraft singles and mayonnaise.

Thrash metal... discuss... early influence?

My first exposure came from bands like Slayer, Sodom and early Sepultura. I always loved the aesthetic, art work and heavy sounds. Old metal always gave you the full package. Eventually i moved onto much heavier shit like Deicide, Cannibal Corpse and shit like that. But obviously, that was just an extension of the older scene. A bit later i starting digging into more of the black metal stuff, which kinda brought me full circle. I feel bad for all these future generations that have no indie record stores to actually curate a taste. I was lucky enough to grow up around 4 really good stores that provided an endless amount musical nonsense with store clerks who knew their shit.

What got you into techno and electronic music?

My first introduction was through the late night mix shows on Detroit radio. I was always into rap from a young age, so i guess the beats kinda fit in line back then. I have always seen similarities in a lot of music that don't necessarily go together. When I was old enough to finally get a job, i worked all summer to save up for my first drum machine. From there my mom snuck me into a club so i could see some live pa electro. The rest is history.

Whats next for Marshall Applewhite?

More music, more shows, more kraft singles and mayo.

Ok if you could have dinner with 3 people from history (any era) who would they be and why?

James Brown, Julia Child, Liberace.
I just wanna meet James Brown in general, Julia Child is merely there to supply buttery goodness and I'm gonna roll Liberace for some new rings.
